Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɡapᴰˢ⁴ (narrow; tight; confined) (Jonsson, 1991), from Proto-Tai *ɡapᴰ (tight; narrow), possibly from Middle Chinese (MC heap, “narrow”) (which became doublet of ၵႅပ်ႈ (kēp)).

Cognate with Thai คับ (káp), Northern Thai ᨣᩢ᩠ᨷ, Lao ຄັບ (khap), ᦅᧇ (kab), Tai Dam ꪁꪚꪾ, Zuojiang Zhuang kaep, Tày cặp.
