Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɡapᴰˢ⁴ (narrow; tight; confined)[1], from Proto-Tai *ɡapᴰ (tight; narrow)[2], possibly from Middle Chinese (MC heap, “narrow”) (which became doublet of แคบ (kɛ̂ɛp)).

Cognate with Northern Thai ᨣᩢ᩠ᨷ, Lao ຄັບ (khap), ᦅᧇ (kab), Tai Dam ꪁꪚꪾ, Shan ၵပ်ႉ (kâ̰p), Zhuang gaeb, Zuojiang Zhuang kaep, Tày cặp.
