[edit]Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɡapᴰˢ⁴ (“narrow; tight; confined”)[1], from Proto-Tai *ɡapᴰ (“tight; narrow”)[2], possibly from Middle Chinese 狹 (MC heap, “narrow”) (which became doublet of แคบ (kɛ̂ɛp)).
Cognate with Northern Thai ᨣᩢ᩠ᨷ, Lao ຄັບ (khap), Lü ᦅᧇ (kab), Tai Dam ꪁꪚꪾ, Shan ၵပ်ႉ (kâ̰p), Zhuang gaeb, Zuojiang Zhuang kaep, Tày cặp.
