Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

According to Schuessler 2007, from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ʔəw-ŋ (pot; vat; jar) (reconstructed provisionally by STEDT, though STEDT does not link the Burmese to this root (ui: "pot")), and cognate with Old Chinese (OC *qoː, “bowl”); this is supported by Luce.[1]

It is unclear whether the "conspicuously quirky" sense is related to the "pot" sense, though MED groups them together.
