From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *h(w)aŋ (rice, that which is eaten with rice (esp. curry)). Cognate with Akha [script needed] (hɔ̀, boiled rice).

Particularly: “STEDT apparently has a potential Chinese comparandum for this, but it's only listed with a code "S533" and no character given (the STEDT database in general seems to be in a "beta build" state). Maybe the character is (OC *bonʔ, *bons, “cooked rice”), which is generally thought to be derived from Proto-Mon-Khmer *puuŋ (cooked rice)? In that case, is this an areal word?”
