Etymology 1

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *sej (fruit; rose; round object). Cognate with Tibetan སེ (se) and Lashi shí. Luce compares Old Chinese (OC *ɦliɡ, “fruit; substance”),[1] though modern reconstructions of the Old pronunciation do not match very well.

The "choke" sense is grouped with the "fruit" sense by MED, though whether they are indeed related is unclear.
