Etymology

Pali āsaṅga (“adhering; clothing (that which hangs on the body)”) +‎ Pali sanghāṭī (“one of the three robes of a Buddhist”). The first term is cognate with Sanskrit आसक्ति (āsakti, “adhering; diligence”), and the second term is equivalent to Sanskrit सम्- (sam-, “with, together”) + Pali ghaṭeti (“to join, connect, unite”), the latter a verbal formation from ghaṭa (“multitude, heap, crowd, thicket”), from Sanskrit घटा (ghaṭā, “collection, assemblage”), from the root घट् (ghaṭ, “to strive, reach, be in connection or united with”), thus "joined together".
