Etymology 1

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “A diverse range of meanings, all grouped together by MED, including the "canoe" sense, which is separated by STEDT. The "pour, cast into a mold" sense isn't given etymology by STEDT (lôŋ "pour into, or upon; add", "bet", "bring into incipient state"), and isn't mentioned by Luce 1981. Could these other senses be linked to the "canoe" sense as a verbalization of it? Some of the compound words, particularly for the "cast into a mold" sense, are semantically close to "canoe".”
