Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Perhaps from a Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ʔ-mun¹/³ (powder). Cognate with Black Lahu [script needed] (məy ~ mə, powder, gunpowder), as well as perhaps Proto-Tani *mɯk (powder) (STEDT). Outside of Lolo-Burmese Luce also adduces Old Chinese (OC *pɯnʔ, “powder”) and Tibetan བུད་ (bud, cloud of dust) as cognate, though this may be outdated.[1]
