Etymology

Inherited from Old Burmese မ္လား (mla:), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g/b/m-la-j (bow; arrow). Cognate with Jingpho mäla, päla, Newar बला (balā), Drung tvma, S'gaw Karen ပျၢ် (pla̱), and Old Chinese (OC *ɢljaːɡs, *laːɡs, *ɢljaːɡ, *laːɡ, “to shoot (an arrow, etc.)”) (STEDT).
