Burmese
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Benedict, as listed by STEDT, tentatively considers the word to be borrowed from Mon (bhwaiʼ "honorary title ( < Mon ? ) ( cf. brâi )"). Other theories take the word as a voiced derivative of Burmese ဖွဲ့ (hpwai., “to tie or twist into a string; to form a union, compose a song”).[1]
