Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (prôŋ "species of millet"), and Luce adduces no cognates.[1] Bears some resemblance to Old Chinese (OC *raŋ, “good millet”), though the lack of an initial *p- in the Old Chinese reconstruction is problematic.”

Likely cognate with Old Chinese (OC *prons, “to change”); note particularly similarity with Korean (byeon, change), the Korean borrowing of the Chinese term. Has also been compared with (OC *roːns, “disorder”) (Baxter, 1992), as well as with Tibetan སྤྲུལ་བ (sprul ba, to transform) (Shi, 2000).
