Inherited from Old Burmese ပိုဝ်း (puiw), from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *bəw² (insect, vermin, bug, snake), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *bəw (insect, snake, vermin, bug). Cognate with Old Chinese (OC *bu, “mayfly”); see there for more (STEDT).
