Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(d/n)waj (to hang from, cling to; creeper); see တွဲ (twai:, to link; drooping) for more (STEDT). Old Chinese (OC *ŋljolʔ, *ŋljulʔ, “stamen”) appears to be a particularly close cognate phonetically.
