Etymology

[edit]
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “MED takes the word as a compound of တံ (tam, rod) +‎ ခါး (hka:, waist), which doesn't seem quite right. First syllable's interpretation is unclear (though could be in the "rod" sense, as in "rod gate" > "barred gate"), but second syllable looks like it's from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/s-k(w)a-y (mouth, door) (STEDT: tam-khà "mouth"), whence Old Chinese (OC *ɡʷaːʔ, “door; household”).”

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • Phonetic respelling: ဒံ'ဂါး
