Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /kʰṵ/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: hku. • ALA-LC: khu • BGN/PCGN: hku. • Okell: hkú

Etymology 1

[edit]
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (khu⁵⁵ "fill (a bowl with rice)"). The "support", "be dissatisfied", and "fill" meanings are considered etymologically united by MED. For the "prop up, support" sense, Luce compares Old Chinese (OC *kʰuːɡs, “to lean on, recline; to depend on”).[1]

Verb

[edit]

ခု (hku.)

  1. to be supported by something (coming) from below, prop up
  2. to be dissatisfied with (someone), be offended
  3. to be filling (until it's not enough to change the rice)

Etymology 2

[edit]
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (khuʼ "unit (unit, an individual thing)"). Luce compares Old Chinese (“bamboo”), which appears to be a typo on his part; he was most likely referring to (OC *kaːls, “unit, generic classifier”), though considering the "bamboo" semantics of the Chinese term which are lacking in the Burmese, this connection seems more tenuous (unless the Burmese term is a more recent loan from Sinitic).[2]

Etymology 3

[edit]
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Doesn't seem to be mentioned by STEDT. MED considers this equivalent to the "unit" sense of Etymology 2 (suggested also by Luce's gloss of "numeral suffix" for Etym 2), based on the "same as ခုနှစ် (hku.hnac, a year ending with a non-zero digit)" definition given by MED.”

Noun

[edit]

ခု (hku.)

  1. the first term in a tenfold sequence starting with ခု (hku.), ဆယ် (hcai), the first number
  2. year
Derived terms
[edit]
  • ခုနှစ် (hku.hnac, the year in a date which ends with a digit other than zero)

Etymology 4

[edit]
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (jɑ⁵³ khu⁵³ "now"), nor by Luce. MED links ခုနှစ် (hku.hnac, this year) with this as well, and appears to consider the "this year" sense etymologically equivalent to the "year not ending with a 0" sense. Oversight on MED's part, or potential etymological connection?”

Noun

[edit]

ခု (hku.)

  1. recently, now, the present (same as ယခု (ya.hku.))
