From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *n-du² (to dig), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s/m-du (to dig, hoe). Cognate with Nuosu (ndu, to dig), Naxi ddv (to dig), Jingpho thu (to dig), Drung du (to excavate, to dig up), and Old Chinese (OC *tʰuːd, *duːd, “to break, dig through; suddenly”) (STEDT).
