Etymology

[edit]

တိုင် (tuing, to inform) +‎ ပင် (pang, to be weighed down). However, Luce apparently takes the semantic identity of ပင် (pang) as separate from the "heavy" sense, and compares it with Old Chinese (OC *peŋ, *peŋs) (represented in modern times by (OC *beːŋʔ, “to be side by side”) or (OC *breːŋʔ, *breːŋs, *peŋʔ, *peŋs, *beːŋʔ, “to combine”)).[1]

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • Phonetic respellings: တိုင်ဗင်, တိုင်မင်
  • IPA(key): /tàɪɴbɪ̀ɴ/, /tàɪɴmɪ̀ɴ/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: tuingpang • ALA-LC: tuiṅʻpaṅʻ • BGN/PCGN: taingbin/taingmin • Okell: taiñpiñ/taiñmiñ
