Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *džim² (raw), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *dz(y)im (raw, green, unripe) (STEDT). Cognate with Lolopo zzeir (raw, uncooked). Luce's comparison to Old Chinese (OC *sʰleːŋ, “blue-green, young”), though semantically appealing, appears to be outdated phonetically.[1]

MED considers the "abandon" sense related, perhaps via semantic shift "raw" > "unfamiliar (not yet processed)" > "to leave unfamiliar" > "to abandon".
