Per Hill (2019) (p. 27), from an earlier proto-Burmish [Term?] (“*dzik”), and cognate with Old Chinese 爭 (OC *ʔsreːŋ, “to fight, dispute”) and the first syllable of Tibetan ཟིང་ཆ (zing cha, “quarrel, dispute”).

Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (cac "filter, strain; examine"). Luce gives Old Chinese 篩 (OC *sreːl, *srel, *sri, “sieve; to strain”) as a cognate.[1] Though the Old Chinese reconstruction isn't particularly close, it does bear some resemblance to that of 爭 (OC *ʔsreːŋ), which is thought to be cognate with the sense in Etymology 1 based on the comparative method.”
