Etymology

According to MED, borrowed from Pali guhā. However, STEDT considers this to be a native term inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kwar (hole, orifice, innards), whence Mizo [Term?] (kua, hole), Old Chinese (OC *kʰloːnʔ, “hole, hollow”). Note also similarities to (OC *kʰluːd, “cave”).

From Proto-Karen *rowᴮ (snake) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *ɣy¹ (idem) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-b/m-ruːl (snake). Cognate with Pa'o Karen ရူး, S'gaw Karen ဂုၢ် (ghu̱), Western Kayah ꤚꤟꤢꤨ (rṳ).
