[edit]According to MED, from ချောင်း (hkyaung:, “a cough”) + ဆိုး (hcui:, “bad, serious”). However, the compound may be better interpreted as ချောင်း (hkyaung:, “throat”) + ဆိုး (hcui:, “to cough”); see those entries for more.
