According to MED, from ချောင်း (hkyaung:, a cough) +‎ ဆိုး (hcui:, bad, serious). However, the compound may be better interpreted as ချောင်း (hkyaung:, throat) +‎ ဆိုး (hcui:, to cough); see those entries for more.
