ချိပ်
Appearance
Burmese
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ʔ-gripᴸ (“bug; ant; insect (lac); cochineal”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-kryap (“bug; ant; insect (lac); cochineal”). Cognate with Proto-Loloish *C-gripᴸ (“lac; pine”), Jingpho krep (“bedbug”), as well as perhaps Old Chinese 蠟 (OC *raːb, “wax”), 汁 (OC *kjub) (STEDT).
MED's derivation from a Hindi छपका लाख (chapkā lākh) appears dubious.
