Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ʔ-gripᴸ (bug; ant; insect (lac); cochineal), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-kryap (bug; ant; insect (lac); cochineal). Cognate with Proto-Loloish *C-gripᴸ (lac; pine), Jingpho krep (bedbug), as well as perhaps Old Chinese (OC *raːb, “wax”), (OC *kjub) (STEDT).

MED's derivation from a Hindi छपका लाख (chapkā lākh) appears dubious.
