[edit]Traditionally analyzed (per MED) as a compound of ကျောက် (kyauk, “stone”) + ကျော (kyau:, “smooth”), though the word may alternatively be borrowed from Teochew 草粿 (cao2 guê2); in the latter case, compare Thai เฉาก๊วย (chǎo-gúai).
