[edit]From earlier *C-ljag (C = prefix, likely the homorganic prenasalisation prefix *ɴ-), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/s/g-ljak (“to lick”). Related to ལྕེ (lce, “tongue”), ལྗགས (ljags, “(polite) tongue”) and Burmese လျက် (lyak, “to lick”). Compare འདག ('dag).
