From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-tsəj (medicine; juice; paint). Compare Nuosu (cy) (as in ꁬꋌ (bbut cy)), Lolopo naxcir (medicine), Naxi cher'ee (medicine), Burmese ဆေး (hce:), Chinese (OC *sʰiɡ).
