From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/s-glak ~ m-glaŋ.

Cognate with Chinese (lěng, cold), Lahu gawˬ (cold, chilly); also compare Chinese (liàng, to dry), Burmese ခြောက် (hkrauk, dry).

Doublet of གྲང (grang).
