From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(g/k)raŋ (to count, to measure) (STEDT). Cognate to Chinese (to measure), Khaling ʾkhran-ne, Burmese ခြင် (hkrang, to measure capacity), Nusu xɹɯ³¹ (to count).
