From Proto-Tai *taɰꟲ (“downstream; below”). Compare Middle Chinese 底 (MC tejX, “bottom; underneath”). Cognate with Thai ใต้ (dtâai), Lü ᦺᦎᧉ (ṫay²), Shan တႂ်ႈ (tāue), Tai Nüa ᥖᥬᥲ (tàue), Ahom 𑜄𑜧 (taw) or 𑜄𑜨𑜧 (tow), Zhuang daej.
