[edit]Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *dajᴬ² (“Tai people; freedom”), from Proto-Tai *ɗwɤːjᴬ (“free”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨴᩱ, Lao ໄທ (thai) or obsolete ໄຕ (tai), Lü ᦺᦑ (tay), Tai Dam ꪼꪕ, Shan တႆး (tái), Aiton တႝ (tay), Phake တႝ (tay), Ahom 𑜄𑜩 (tay); when each word is solely used, it refers to its own ethnic group.
