From Sanskrit गोत्र (gotra, clan; family; kin; tribe; etc); probably via Old Khmer គោត្រ (gotra), គោត្ត្រ (gottra, family; family member; lineage; house). Cognate with Modern Khmer គោត្រ (kootrɔɔ).
