Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *miəᴬ⁴ (wife), from Proto-Tai *miəᴬ (wife)[1]. Cognate with Northern Thai ᨾ᩠ᨿᩮ, Khün ᨾᩮ, Isan เมีย, Lao ເມຍ (mīa), ᦵᦙ (me), Tai Dam ꪣꪸ, Tai Dón ꪝꪸ, Shan မေး (mée), Ahom 𑜉𑜣 ().
