From Proto-Tai *raːᴮ (“epidemic”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩁ᩵ᩣ, Lao ຮ່າ (hā), Shan ႁႃႈ (hāa), Phake ꩭႃ (hā), Ahom 𑜍𑜠 (ra), Zhuang raq, Zuojiang Zhuang haq.
