Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰlɔːtᴰᴸ¹ (tube; bobbin), from Proto-Tai *ʰlwuːtᴰ (spool).[1]

Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩖᩬᨯ, Khün ᩉᩖᩬᨯ, Lao ຫຼອດ (lǭt), ᦜᦸᧆᧈ (l̇oad¹), Tai Dón ꪨꪮꪒ, Shan လွတ်ႇ (làut), Zhuang lwt (spool).
