From Proto-Tai *ʰmaːjᴬ (to mark; to aim). Cognate with Lao ໝາຍ (māi), ᦖᦻ (ṁaay), Tai Dam ꪢꪱꪥ, Shan မၢႆ (mǎai), Ahom 𑜈𑜩𑜤 (bayu).
