[edit]From สุ (sù, “good”) + ราษฎร์ (râat, “citizen; inhabitant”) + ธานี (taa-nii, “town; city”); literally "city of good citizens"; coined by Rama VI in 1915; สุราษฎร์ (sù-râat; “good citizens”) being phono-semantic matching of Gujarati સુરત (surat, “Surat”, city in Gujarat); formerly known as บ้านดอน (bâan-dɔɔn).[1]
