From Sanskrit भूधर (bhūdhara, literally earth bearing), from भू (bhū, earth) + धर (dhara, bearing; carrying; supporting; holding; upholding; maintaining; etc); equivalent to Thai ภู (puu) +‎ ธร (tɔɔn).

Cognate with Lao ພູທອນ (phū thǭn), Khmer ភូធរ (phuthrô).
