[edit]From Pali byañjana (“sign; mark; consonant”), vyañjana (“attribute; distinctive mark; sign; characteristic; letter; consonant”) or Sanskrit व्यञ्जन (vyañjana, “making clear, indicating, manifesting; mark, token, sign; consonant; etc”). Cognate with Khmer ព្យញ្ជនៈ (pyŭəñcĕəʼnĕəʼ), Lao ພະຍັນຊະນະ (pha nyan sa na), Burmese ဗျည်း (byany:).
