From Proto-Tai *kaːnꟲ (stem),[1] from Middle Chinese (MC kanH, “body, trunk”).

Cognate with Lao ກ້ານ (kān), Tai Nüa ᥐᥣᥢᥲ (kàan), Shan ၵၢၼ်ႈ (kāan), Tày cản, Zhuang ganj in ganjfaex (tree trunk).
