Derived from Proto-South Dravidian *cōṭam. Cognate with Kannada ಓಡ (ōḍa), Gujarati હોડી (hoḍī), Tamil ஓடம் (ōṭam), Tigre ሆሪ (hori), Telugu ఓడ (ōḍa), Tulu ಓಡ (ōḍa), Dhivehi އޮޑި (oḍi), Marathi होडी (hoḍī) and Sanskrit होड (hoḍa). Doublet of ഓടം (ōṭaṁ).
