[edit]From English banyan or banian, a borrowing from Tamil வணிகன் (vaṇikaṉ), வாணியன் (vāṇiyaṉ) or from Gujarati વાણિયો (vāṇiyo), through Portuguese baniano, from Arabic بَنِيَان (baniyān), ultimately from Sanskrit वणिज् (vaṇij).
