Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *kiẓank-. From கீழ் (kīḻ, to dig; underneath, bottom). Compare Kannada ಗೆಣಸು (geṇasu), Malayalam കിഴങ്ങ് (kiḻaṅṅŭ), Tulu ಕೆರೆಂಗ್ (kereṅgŭ).
