Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀫𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀡 (*makkhaṇa), from Sanskrit म्रक्षण (mrakṣaṇa, rubbing, ointment, oil), nominalized from the verb म्रक्षति (mrakṣati, to smear, rub, anoint). Cognate with Assamese মাখন (makhon), Bengali মাখন (makhon) and Hindi मक्खन (makkhan).
