Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Prakrit *𑀪𑁂𑀟 (*bheḍa), *𑀪𑁂𑀟𑁆𑀟 (*bhĕḍḍa), *𑀪𑁂𑀁𑀟 (*bheṃḍa), from Sanskrit भेड (bheḍa), भेड्र (bheḍra), भेण्ड (bheṇḍa) (these terms could instead be later Sanskritizations of the unattested Prakrit forms), ultimately from a substrate, possibly Munda. Cognate with Assamese ভেড়া (bhera), Bengali ভেড়া (bheṛa), Maithili भेँड़ो (bhē̃ṛō), Bhojpuri भेड़ा (bhēṛā), Hindi भेड़ (bheṛ) and Nepali भेडो (bheḍo).
