[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀭𑀲 (sārasa, “crane”), from Sanskrit सारस (sārasa, “the crane Ardea sibirica < relating or belonging to or coming from a pond or lake”), a vṛddhi-derivative of सरस् (saras, “lake”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *sáras, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sáras, from late, southern dialectal Proto-Indo-European *sélos ~ *séles (“marsh”). Cognate with Bengali সারস (śaroś), Hindustani سارس / सारस (sāras), Marathi and Nepali सारस (sāras), and Odia ସାରସ (sārasa).
