[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀭𑀼𑀧𑁆𑀧 (ruppa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit रूप्य (rūpya). Cognate with Hindustani رُوپا / रूपा (rūpā), Marwari रूपौ (rūpau), Punjabi رُپّا / ਰੁੱਪਾ (ruppā), Romani rup, Sindhi رُپو (rupo).
