[edit]Named after Mahmud Shah I. A corruption of Classical Persian مَحْمُود آبَاد (mahmūd ābād), a compound of مَحْمُود (mahmūd) + ـآبَاد (-ābād, “placename suffix”).[1] For the corruption, compare અમદાવાદ (amdāvād).
