Etymology

Named after Mahmud Shah I. A corruption of Classical Persian مَحْمُود آبَاد (mahmūd ābād), a compound of مَحْمُود (mahmūd) +‎ ـآبَاد (-ābād, placename suffix).[1] For the corruption, compare અમદાવાદ (amdāvād).
