[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀩𑁄𑀟𑀺𑀬 (boḍiya, “bald”).[1] According to Hindu tradition, widows had their heads shaved. Cognate with Kumaoni बोड़ो (boṛo, “man without facial hair”) and Punjabi بوڑا / ਬੋੜਾ (boṛā, “toothless person”).
