[edit]Derived from Prakrit 𑀓𑀯𑀮 (kavala), from Sanskrit कवल (kavala).
Perhaps ultimately from Dravidian; compare Malayalam കവളം (kavaḷaṁ, “ball of boiled rice”), Tamil கவளம் (kavaḷam, “mouthful”), Kannada ಕಬಳ (kabaḷa).
Cognate with Hindi कौर (kaur), Sindhi ڪورو (koro, “piece of fish”), Sinhalese කවලය (kawalaya).
