[edit]Ultimately from Sanskrit अलिन् (alin, “black bee; scorpion”). Possibly an deformation of an earlier *અળિ (aḷi).[1] Compare Hindustani الی / अली (alī) and Marathi अळ (aḷ), अळी (aḷī), अळई (aḷaī, “maggot”).
