Borrowed from Classical Persian مشعل (maš'al), from Arabic مَشْعَل (mašʕal, torch). Cognate with Hindi मशाल (maśāl), Marathi मशाल (maśāl), Odia ମଶାଲ (maśāla), Sindhi مَشْعَلُ, Konkani मशाल (maśāl), Bengali মশাল (mośal), Assamese মহলা (mohola), Nepali मसाल् (masāl).
